Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 11 (UNB)-BNP chairperson and leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia didn’t turn up in parliament Thursday to give ceremonial thanks to the President for his maiden New Year speech. Today was the concluding day for the general debate on the thanks motion on the President’s address to the House, and top leaders from both sides of the aisle had their turns to speak. On January 4 this year, President Zillur Rahman addressed the ninth parliament, elected through the December 29, 2008 polls at the end two years of emergency rule following the 1/11 changeover staged with military backing amid political turmoil over election issues. At 7:14 pm, it was the opposition leader’s turn to take the floor after the speech of Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury. But, to his little surprise, Speaker Abdul Hamid didn’t find the Leader of the Opposition in the House. The Speaker gave the floor over to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for winding up the discussions on the thanksgiving motion on the presidential speech. The reason for Khaleda’s abstaining from taking part in the thanksgiving to the President for his speech could not be known immediately. The former prime minister, however, has attended this session only for a single day since her party ended a long boycott and returned to parliament, and for four days in total in as many sessions so far held. Other BNP members were present in the House while Prime Minister Hasina was delivering her speech. Earlier in the day today (Thursday), senior BNP members barrister Zamiruddin Sircar and opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farooque took part in the thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech.
