Ex-Rab officer held on robbery charge

Dhaka, May 3 (UNB) - Police arrested the former commanding officer of Rab-7 from the city’s Moghbazar area early Thursday on charges of looting Tk 2.07 crore from a shrine in Chittagong.Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of police from Ramna and Anwara police stations raided a house at Doctor Lane in Maghbazar at about 3:30am and arrested Lieutenant Colonel (sacked) Zulfiqar Ali Majumder.On November 4 last year, Zulfiqar along with 20 to 30 people, including some Rab men in plainclothes and their informants, allegedly looted Talsara Darbar Sharif at Anwara upazila in Chittagong Mohammad Idris of Talsara Darbar Sharif filed a case with the local police station accusing 10 members of Rab-7, two of their informants and some 15 unnamed persons on March 13. In the case statement, the plaintiff alleged that the Rab officials with the help of their cohorts entered the shrine and looted Tk 2.07 crore after breaking steel cupboard of the Darbar Sharif in the name of search operation.The money was given by the followers of the Darbar Sharif and kept inside the cupboard, Idris added.Zulfiqar went into hiding after he was fired on April 30 for his involvement with the robbery.The other accused include Captain Wahidul Hasan, DAD Abul Bashar, SI Tapan Kumar, Nayek Hasanuzzaman, ASI Jahangir Alam, Nayek Mohammad Liton, constable Suman, ASI Ali Ashraf and Sepoy Jasim Uddin and informants Didarul Alam and Anwar Miah.Inspector (investigation) Abdus Samad was given the charge to look into the matter.
