RMG protest hits Pabna

Pabna, June 23 (UNB) – Barely one week after the end of violent protests for pay hike by garments workers in Ashulia, agitation broke out in Ishwardi ready-made garments (RMG) units for reinstatement of terminated workers on Saturday. Several hundred terminated workers of Roshita Knitwears Ltd and Megatex staged demonstration in Ishwardi EPZ demanding their reinstatement, released of arrestees and pay hike. They also took out a procession from Ishwardi EPZ and formed a human chain at Rooppur More at 11 am. Earlier, their colleagues observed work abstention in the two factories, supporting the demands of their sacked colleagues expressing solidarity with them. General Manager of Rushita Knitwear Mahmud Hassan said over 200 workers of knitwear department of the sweater factory abstained from work from morning to 2 pm. Rushita and Megatex authorities sacked 291 workers and filed cases against many others following demonstration in the two RMG units for pay hike recently. Last week 200 people, including cops, were injured as several thousand garments workers vandalised factories and passing vehicles and torched them at Ashulia in Savar and Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chittagong over their various demands including pay hike.
