Flood waters inundate Sylhet; 2 killed

Sylhet, June 27 (UNB) – Flood triggered by heavy rain and onrush of water coming across the border inundated 10 upazilas here, leaving about 10 lakh people marooned.Ten upazilas are Fenchuganj, Jakiganj, Kanaighat, Jaintapur, Goainghat, Companyganj, Bianibazar, Balaganj, Dakkhin Surma and Bishwanath. Most of the places of the upazilas went under water since Monday afternoon.  Besides, two people drowned in Goainghat and Jaintapur upazilas on Wednesday and Tuesday. Road communication between Sadar and seven other upazilas remained snapped and train services between Sylhet and Chhatak remained halted.  Most of the educational institutions and offices were forced to close due to gushing water. Over 100 boats and machineries were washed away at several stone quarries, including Bholaganj, Jaflong, Bichanakandi, Lobhachhara.Tea worker Shri Dibosh, 16, drowned in Jaflong tea garden in Goainghat upazila on Wednesday and Ruma, 5, at Charikata village in Jaintapur upazila on Tuesday. Nihar Ranjan Das, deputy assistant engineer of Sylhet Water Development Board, said Surma River at Kanaighat point was flowing 1.81 cm above danger level while 65 cm at Sylhet point.He said Kushiara River at Jakiganj Amalshid point was flowing 1.78 cm above the danger level and 97 cm above danger level in Bianibazar Sheula point.
