Army to be modernised: Hasina

Dhaka, July 5 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said her government is pledged-bound to ensure the country’s overall development and its people as well as modernising the armed forces.The Prime Minister said this while addressing a function marking the 37th founding anniversary of the President Guard Regiment (PGR) at Dhaka Cantonment.Hasina said implementation of the National Defense Policy and Forces Goal 2030 of Bangladesh Army is underway.She mentioned that a strong, disciplined, well-educated and professional army equipped with modern technology is the symbol of national independence and sovereignty.In this context, she said a permanent residence and an operational deployment have been established for a ‘brigade group’ at Ramu to protect the country’s eastern border.The Prime Minister said her government always feels to build a modern armed force with research, training and adequate administrative equipment."The Awami League government always takes effective steps to develop the armed forces as it believes in development, expansion and modernisation of the army," she said.Elaborating various steps of her government during the current tenure and its previous term for the development of the armed forces, the Prime Minister said her government during its previous term (1996 -2001) implemented massive programmes to this end.The programmes include setting up of a number of units, brigades, and various institutions such as National Defense College, Military Institute of Science and Technology, Armed Forces Medical College and Bangladesh Institute of Peace support and training.Hasina said, after assuming office this time, her government procured over 150 APCs for strengthening the army and established an AD regiment for the army.She said Mig 29 has been procured for the Air Force and construction work of advance base in Cox's Bazar is progressing well.
