Govt committed to functioning democracy: PM

Dhaka, July 11 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday iterated her government’s firm commitment to ensure a functioning democracy for the continuation of development activities in the country.“In keeping with such commitment even beyond Bangladesh, my government got the `SAARC Chartre of Democracy’ adopted in 2011,” she said when newly appointed French Ambassador Michel Trinquier met her at her office in the morning.After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters.The Prime Minister said the country could not achieve the desired development in the last 41 years due to undemocratic rule for many years.She informed the French ambassador that the tribunal to prosecute those accused of war crimes perpetrated in 1971 is working based on transparency, objectivity and fairness, and following due legal process an as per the international standards.Hasina said Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relations with France whom it considers as one of the most valued friends and partners in Europe and also at the global stage.“The engagements between Bangladesh and France in different fields like culture and education hold potential for further development.”She sought more French investment in Bangladesh considering the congenial business environment, easily trainable workforce, and attractive package of fiscal incentives.The Prime Minister highlighted her government’s tremendous successes in the fields of agriculture, education, health, social safety net, food security and women empowerment.She said Bangladesh has maintained over 6 percent GDP growth over the last three years despite the global recession.Hasina conveyed her greetings to the newly-elected French President and the Prime Minister through the ambassador.She assured the new envoy of all possible help and cooperation in discharging his duties and wished him success in his new assignment.Ambassador Trinquer praised the dynamic and visionary leadership of Sheikh Hasina and her government’s successes and progress in various fields in the last three and half years.He expressed satisfaction over the existing friendly relations between the two countries and hoped that the ties would be strengthened further in the days to come.Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Sheikh Md Wahid Uz Zaman, PMO Secretary Molla Waheeduzzaman and Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present.
