Road crash death toll climbs to 18

Dhaka, Aug 21 (UNB) – At least 18 people were killed and 60 others injured in road accidents in six districts on Tuesday and Monday night. According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, five people were killed and 15 injured in a road accident at Gormati in Boraigram upazila on Natore-Pabna Highway in Natore at noon.Four of the deceased were identified as school students Milon, 15, Nantu, 16, Joynal, 14, and Sujon, 14, of Daulaltpur upazila in Kushtia district. Quoting witnesses, police said the accident occurred when a Natore-bound BRTC bus smashed two ‘Nasimans’ (locally-made human haulers) at about 12 noon. Police said 20 youths were on their way to Rajbari in Natore from Kushtia. In Pabna, four people, including a baby boy, were killed and 25 others injured in a fatal road accident in Ishwardi upazila. The dead were identified as Shabab, 1, son of Monira of Kushtia, and three bikers -- Shamim, 27, Enamul Haque, 30, and Shahidul Islam, 27. The three bikers hailed from the same upazila. Police said the accident took place when a Jhenidah-bound bus of Hanif Paribahan coming from Dhaka hit a motorcycle from behind near Joynagar union parishad office, killing one of its riders on the spot and injuring two others.After hitting the bike, the bus fell into a roadside ditch around 2:45pm, killing its passenger Shabab on the spot and injuring 25 passengers, including Monira. One of the injured bikers died on the way to a local hospital, while another on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. The injured were admitted to different hospitals. In Keraniganj, three unidentified people died on the spot and two others were injured as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a bus collided at Rajhalot in South Keraniganj upazila around 2:30pm. The injured were admitted to Mitford Hospital.In Gaibandha, a motorcyclist, Rubel Mia, resident of Phulchari upazila, was injured when an auto-rickshaw hit his bike at Madanpara in Phulchari upazila on Monday night, leaving him injured. Police took him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died early Tuesday.In Comilla, a man was killed and 18 people were injured in separate road accidents in Daudkandi and Chouddagram upazila on Tuesday. A Noakhali-bound bus from Dhaka fell into a roadside ditch at Shaheednagar in Daudkandi upazila at noon as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving 14 people injured. The injured were admitted to different hospitals.In another accident in Comilla, three unidentified motorcyclists were killed when a bus hit their bike at Nurtali in Chandina upazila on Tuesday. Witnesses said the accident took place around 6pm, leaving one of the bikers dead on the spot, while two others died on the way to upazila health complex. Yet in another accident, an unknown man was killed and four others were injured as a Comilla-bound bus from Feni ploughed though a roadside hotel at Batisha in Chouddagram upazila at 2pm.In Bagerhat, Qaiyum Fakir, 55, a farmer of Patorpara in Sadar upazila, died on the spot as a truck hit him while he was crossing a road near Khan Jahan Ali Mazar in Sadar upazila around 4:30pm.
