Dhaka, Sept 2 (UNB) - The teachers and students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) on Sunday warned that they will go for a stronger movement if the Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor do not quit by Monday morning. The students of the top engineering university formed a human chain in front of the Civil Engineering Building at about 11am.At about 11:30am, the demonstrators burned the effigies of VC Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC M Habibur Rahman on the campus and later brought out a procession. At noon, the agitators assembled in front of Buet Council Building where they will stay till 11am tomorrow (Monday). They said they will announce even tougher programmes at 11am Monday if their demand goes unheeded by the time. A section of Buet teachers went to meet the VC at his office at 12:30pm, but the VC was not there in the office.Repeated attempts of some journalists to meet the VC also went in vain.Meanwhile, the agitating students alleged that outsiders tried to attack them today and are intimating asking them to refrain from joining the agitation. On Saturday, the Buet students warned that they would go for a tougher movement if its Vice-Chancellor and pro-Vice Chancellor do not step down by Sunday morning.Buet reopened on August 25 after a 44-day vacation announced earlier amid a tough movement launched by its teachers and students demanding removal of its VC.The academic activities at Buet remain halted since the reopening on Aug 25 due to class boycott and agitations by the teachers and students.
