Dhaka, Jan 6 (UNB) - President Zillur Rahman Wednesday emphasized on patronizing education and research institutions with a view to help spreading the art, literature and researches.
“You know that art, literature and research cannot be extended without patronization,” he said while inaugurating the 13th biennial meeting of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Besides the government, the President also urged the affluent sections of the society to extend their helping hands for taking forward the research institutes like the Asiatic Society. “I hope, this way research activities will become more extensive and
enriched,” he said.
Congratulating the newly elected council members of the Asiatic Society, President Zillur Rahman expressed the firm hope that the Society would gradually prosper by their dynamic and scholarly leadership.
He noted that research along side education could play an important role in taking the society forward and in determining the future work-plan following recommendations resulting from the research activities.
“I believe, merit, knowledge and wisdom of our illustrious scholars will play a special role in providing suggestions for the national development,” he said.
Describing the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh as a prestigious research institution of the country, the President said since its birth, the Society has been playing pioneering role in preserving the rare documents and in publishing journals and scholarly books.
“Its main elements of research are the people and nature of Asia,” he said, recalling that the Asiatic Society of Bengal was established in 1784 by the sincere efforts of Sir William Jones, a former judge of Calcutta High Court.
“With respect, I remember all wise and scholarly personalities under whose competent leadership, the Society has reached its current stage over the times,” he said.
President Zillur Rahman noted that over 50 years, the Asiatic Society has been playing a laudable role in the development of education, research and human resources in the South-East Asian countries.
The Society’s research publications have been praised at home and abroad, he said. These include National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh, History of Bangladesh, Bangladesh on the threshold of the 21st Century, Administration of Justice of Bangladesh, Golden Jubilee Volume, Sharia Law, A Trilogy of Archeological Sites, Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh, and Cultural Survey of Bangladesh.
Referring to `Vision-2021’ declared by the daughter of Bangabandhu, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to build a prosperous Bangladesh based on information technology, President Zillur said people of all strata of the society would have to continue with their concerted efforts for implementation of the programme.
He congratulated the two scholars -- Prof AM Harun-Ar-Rashid and Prof AKM Zakaria -- who have been given the ‘President’s Award’ this year in recognition of their research activities.
Among others, president of Asiatic Society of Bangladesh Prof. Sirajul Islam and its general secretary Prof. Mahfuza Khanam also spoke on the occasion.
