Govt efforts on to increase number of railway engines, container carrying wagons

Sangsad Bhaban, Jan 11 (UNB) - The Communications Ministry has been making hectic efforts to increase the number of railway engines and container carrying wagons, Parliament was told Monday.

Replying to a starred question of Benjir Ahmed (Awami League-Dhaka), Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain said that it was not possible to increase the number of container carrying trains for lack of engines and container carrying wagons.

There is a plan to convert the Dhaka-Chittagong rail route into dual gauge, after which it would be possible to increase the container carrying trains, he said.

Replying to AKM Mostafizur Rahman (Jatiya Party-Kurigram), the Minister said the government plans to complete the construction of the Padma Bridge by December 2013.

Replying to a starred question of Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh (Awami League-Munshiganj), he said that at present, Bangladesh Railways have 659 kilometers of broad gauge tracks and 1801 kilometers of meter gauge.
