Dhaka, Jan 28 (UNB) - Five former army officers were hanged to death in Dhaka Central Jail on Wednesday midnight for the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members 35 years ago.
Those hanged one after another since one-minute past midnight are Lt Col (sacked) Syed Faruque Rahman, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Lt Col (retd) Muhiuddin Ahmed (Artillery), Maj (retd) AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed (Lancer) and Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda.
The bodies in coffin in ambulance were brought out from the jail one after another and left for their respective homes at 2-50 am Thursday under heavy security guard. They will be buried in their family graveyard.
Body of Muhiuddin Ahmed and AKM Mohiuddin were sent to Galachipa in Patuakhali district, Farooq to Naogaon, Bazlul Huda to Meherpur and Shahriar to Brahmanbaria.
Earlier, mercy petitions of four of them were summarily rejected by the President. The Supreme Court also rejected their petitions for review the death penalty awarded by a special judge’s court and confirmed by the High Court.
Twelve former army officers had been sentenced to death in the Bangabandhu Murder Case. One of them died years back while six others remained fugitive since the trial of the murder case reopened in 1996 when Awami League came to power.
Civil surgeon Dr Mofizur Rahman present at the gallows confirmed the deaths. Inspector General (Prisons) Ashraful Islam, senior civil and police officers were present at the time of execution.
Informed sources said their bodies would be sent to their respective village homes before the dawn for burial.
Five hangmen - Raju of Dhaka Central Jail and Shahjahan, Sanwar, Farooq and Hafiz from Kashimpur Jail-hanged the rebel army officers for the killing of the country’s founding father in a predawn putsch on August 15, 1975.
On November 19 last year, the apex court upheld the High Court confirmation of the death sentence on the twelve ex-army officers through dismissing all the five appeals filed by the detained five.
At the crack of dawn on August 15, 1975, father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most members of his family, except his two daughters - incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who were fortunately abroad at the time -- were killed by a splinter group of the armed forces.
The death sentence on twelve of the convicts was upheld in the High Court's verdict delivered on April 30, 2001.
The case was filed on October 2, 1996 -- 21 years after the killings - with the Indemnity Ordinance having been done away with to pave the way for the trial.
A trial court on November 8, 1998 sentenced a total of 15 retired and dismissed army personnel for the August 15, 1975 carnage that had changed the course of politics in the newly-liberated Bangladesh.
