News - Bangladesh, France to work together to promote cultural ties, economic cooperation
Dhaka, Feb 5 (UNB) - Bangladesh is ready to work together with France for promoting cultural ties as well as strengthening trade and economic cooperation.

“We want to work together to strengthen our relations and enhance cooperation in trade, commerce and tourism,” Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Abdul Kalam Azad told the closing ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka at the Rose Garden in Old Dhaka.

Jean-Claude Jacq, Secretary General de la Foundation Alliance Francaise, French Ambassador Charley Causeret and Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, President of the Executive Committee of the Alliance Fraincaise, spoke at the function.

A group of Bangladeshi and French artistes presented dance and music at the green lawn of the Rose Garden in the evening.

The Information Minister said Bangladesh and France signed an agreement on Cultural, Science and technology in 1987 which could be strengthened through exchange of cultural programmes between the two countries.

Azad appreciated the Alliance Fraincaise de Dhaka for imparting French language to the young generation and improve their skills in cultural activities.

He said Bangladesh is a progressive democratic country and wants to be a middle-income economy by 2021 by eradicating corruption and poverty.

Jean-Claude Jacq, Secretary General de la Foundation Alliance Francaise, said Bangladesh is an important country in the region in terms of her population, culture, peace and development efforts.

He said the world has changed a lot in the past 50 years. “Communication, mass media and the Internet have reduced the distances with many regions, and culture and civilization is now part of the present globalization.”

Jacq reminded that the populations that relinquish or deny their past, language and own cultural heritage they cannot create anything for their future; they waned and finally lost.

“For that matter, one of the main tasks of the Alliance Francaise is to preserve and maintain cultural diversity,” he said, adding they have set up more 1000 Alliances in 133 countries across the five continents where nearly 4, 91, 000 students are studying.

Giving a detailed background of the Alliance Francaise in Dhaka established in 1959, the French Ambassador said new challenges are to be faced to make French language and culture more accessible to the people of Bangladesh.

The French envoy said a range of specialized French courses, for example, could be developed for businessmen or tourists. “French teaching through e-learning should also be proposed.”
