Kuwait City, Feb 9 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday asked the Bangladeshi military personnel deployed in defence of Kuwait to work with utmost dedication and sincerity for further brightening Bangladesh’s image abroad.
“You have earned worldwide acclaim while discharging duties under UN Peacekeeping Mission. Now you have to work hard further to uphold the image in greater interest of the country,” she said while addressing the Bangladesh Military Contingent deployed in Kuwait under UN Peacekeeping Mission at Sobhan Cantonment in the Gulf state.
She said her government is functioning with utmost transparency and accountability as the government believes in ensuring transparency in all works.
Sheikh Hasina said the government has taken various measures for development of Bangladesh’s armed forces. “Our government has also taken steps to modernize the armed forces for protecting country’s independence and sovereignty.”
The Prime Minister, here on a three-day state visit, promised that her government would do everything possible for the development and modernization of the armed forces.
She recalled that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman formed the armed forces to protect independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh after the country’s liberation.
Describing various steps for the welfare of the peacekeepers, the premier said her government has taken steps so that the Bangladeshi peacekeepers could talk to their near and dear ones over telephone at home at minimum costs.
In this context, she mentioned that her previous government had introduced rice in the dishes of Bangladesh armed forces instead of ‘ruti’ (bread).
About democracy, the Prime Minister said democracy has been established again in Bangladesh through a free, fair and acceptable election. Now people are enjoying their rights under the democratic environment.
Describing democracy as a prerequisite for development, she said without democracy none can achieve development. “Considering this, we are taking all-out measurers to further strengthen democracy in Bangladesh.”
About prices of essentials, Sheikh Hasina said her government, after assuming office through a free, fair and internationally acclaimed election, reduced prices of essential commodities to a significant level.
“We brought back the price of rice to Tk 18 from Tk 45 per kg immediately after coming to power,” she told the expatriate military personnel, adding: “Considering the situation of farmers we have fixed the rate at Tk 22 recently.”
Citing some historic events, she said Kuwait is the trusted friend of Bangladesh as it had helped reconstruction of the war-ravaged Bangladesh after its War of Independence. In this context, she said Bangladesh also helped Kuwait for reconstruction of the Arab state after the Kuwait-Iraq war.
Later, the Prime Minister visited the Liberation War Museum of Kuwait, Kuwait Oil Company and Kuwait Scientific Centre. The visiting Bangladesh premier went round different sections there and signed the visitor’s books.
A separate pavilion was set up at the Kuwait Liberation War Museum in honour of Bangladeshi soldiers who were killed during minesweeping in the country after the Iraqi invasion.
Among others, Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, State Minister for Forest and Environment Dr Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh Ambassador in Kuwait Shahid Reza, Principle Secretary MA Karim, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Abdus Sobhan Golap and Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad were present.
Later, the Prime Minister attended a reception organized by the expatriate Bangladeshis in Kuwait at Bayan Palace.
