
Dhaka, Feb 11 (UNB)-Turkish President Abdullah Gul accompanied by his spouse arrives here tomorrow (Friday) on a 2-day state visit to Bangladesh with trade and investment high on his agenda.
President Gul will be leading a 210-member delegation comprising the Minister of State, Minister of Health and Minister of Transportation, high-ranking bureaucrats and about 80 leading businessmen.
President Zillur Rahman would receive the Turkish President at Zia International Airport at 2pm on his arrival from Mumbai, India.
His visit is seen as very important in promoting trade and investment between the two countries.
Turkish Ambassador in Bangladesh Zakir Ozkan Torunlar told UNB that President Abdullah Gul’s visit is aimed at examining how to improve trade and business between Turkey and Bangladesh.
The volume of two-way trade was US$ 658 million in 2009. Turkish exports to Bangladesh were worth $134 million while Bangladesh’s exports fetched US$ 523 million.
Ambassador Torunlar said Turkey wants to push the trade figure to one- billion-dollar mark this year.
It will be the first visit to Bangladesh by a Turkish President after long 13 years. In 1997, Turkish President Soleiman Demirel visited Bangladesh to attend the silver-jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh’s independence.
During his stay, Turkish President Abdullah Gul will meet President Zillur Rahman at Bangabhaban on Friday evening. Later, the Turkish President will be given a state banquet at Bangabhaban. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the banquet.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will call on the visiting President and host a lunch in his honour at Sonargaon Hotel.
President Gul will attend a breakfast meeting to be hosted by FBCCI president Annisul Huq at Sonargaon Hotel. An MoU on trade and investment will be signed by FBCCI and its Turkish counterpart TOBB in presence of the Turkish President.
President Gul will attend a special convocation arranged at Nawab Nawab Ali Senate Hall of Dhaka University, where he will be awarded honorary doctorate of Laws by the University of Dhaka.
The Turkish leader will leave Dhaka on Saturday evening.
