
Dhaka, Mar 3 (UNB) - Secretary General of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Dr. Hamadoun I Toure has lauded the vision of Digital Bangladesh-2021 as set by Prime minister Sheikh
Hasina.
He said: “Bangladesh initiated the process of Vision-2021 to achieve Digital Bangladesh and is going on the right track. I don’t see any obstacle for Bangladesh to achieve the vision. The vision is very
achievable and reasonable.”
Addressing a press conference at Hotel Sheraton on Wednesday concluding his visit to Bangladesh, the ITU secretary general said stable regulatory law and functional ministry are vital to encourage investment in the ICT sector.
“Bangladesh has huge population. If the population can be trained up with ICT education, they will emerge as asset for the country.”
Replying to a query, he suggested that Bangladesh should put emphasis on friendly regulatory framework, right environment in terms of policy and legal framework, making private sector competitive, enhancing capacity building and training all concerned to achieve the vision of Digital Bangladesh-2021.
Dr Toure said rules and regulations should be helpful with a view to adopting technological advantages.
ITU is designing a plan to help Bangladesh during any disaster and emergency, he told a questioner.
Commenting on Bangladesh’s progress in ICT sector, the ITU secretary general said: “We are very pleased with whatever we have seen so far in Bangladesh.”
He, however, said Internet penetration rate in Bangladesh is very low.
Dr. Toure said ITU can play an important role in mitigating the impact of climate change by using ICT -- through video conference, television and radio.
During his stay here, he visited a hospital and schools equipped with ICT facilities.
