Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 4 (UNB)- Good sense finally prevailed. The government and opposition in parliament tonight pledged to shun mudslinging and start journey anew to make the House effective and meaningful.
Both sides agreed to avoid indecorous and disrespectful remarks about Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman, the rancor that bedeviled the proceedings of the House during the last few days.
Senior members from the opposition and treasury benches expressed their willingness to uphold the dignity of parliament and make it effective in fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
BNP stalwart Barrister Moudud Ahmed initiating the move said, “We hope, from today let us begin a new journey. We will cooperate.”
“It is natural that if any member of opposition makes indecorous and indecent remarks about Bangabandhu Shekih Mujibur Rahman, that will hurt and agitate the minds of the treasury bench. Similarly, if adverse and filthy comments are made of late President Ziaur Rahman, the reaction will be the same from the opposition,” he said.
Maudud assured that no bad comments will be made about the Awami League leader from their side and would expect the government members will also refrain from adverse remarks on their leader.
Referring to the rancorous debates, the seasoned parliamentarian said it was meaningless. It has given to doubt if the opposition will continue in the House.
Maudud lauded the chair for restricting the floor for meaningless debate and warning against bad manners. “The ruling of the Speaker has changed the environment of the House.”
“We would strongly criticize you (government), similarly we will tolerate your (treasury bench) criticism. We will perform the role of the opposition,” he added.
Suranjit Sengupta of the treasury bench said, “we have no dispute over criticism of the government but we have objection to the opposition tendency to distort the history.’
He agreed with Maudud and said it should be determined that no leaders are disrespected.
MK Anwar of BNP and Tofail Ahmed of Awami League also spoke for discarding provocative statements, maintaining dignity of the House and making parliament meaningful.
