Benapole, Mar 7 (UNB) - Jute export to India through Benapole land port resumed on Saturday after three months due to Government ban.
Customs Cargo Officer Debasish Kundu said 247 tons of jute worth Tk 1.30 crore were exported to India during the last two days.
The government on December 7 had banned export of jute because of scarcity and to meet the demand of domestic jute mills. The ban was withdrawn on February 11 at the behest of jute traders.
But the government has raised the export price to US$ 750 from US$ 600.
In the domestic market jute price has also increased to Tk 1,700 to Tk 1,800 per maund.
India, Pakistan, China are the main buyers of Bangladesh jute. Britain, Spain, Ivory Coast, Germany and Brazil also import raw jute from Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is the world's largest and quality jute growing country. About 55 lakh bales (1 bale = 180kg) were produced in the country last year.
Of the 160 jute and jute spinning mills in the country, around 30 are closed and a similar number operate irregularly, while about 100 are in full operation now.
