News - Swiss Ambassador Visits ‘Cash for Livelihood’ Project in Aila-hit area
Dhaka, Mar 8 (UNB)-Ambassador of Switzerland Dr Urs Herren Monday visited the Swiss government-funded ‘Cash for Livelihood’ project in the Aila-ravaged Padma Pukur Union under Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira where climate refugees are struggling to rebuild their life.

The envoy talked to the beneficiaries and noted with satisfaction that the people have started rebuilding their livelihoods and professions with the Swiss cash support provided under the aided
scheme.

“I am specially impressed by the resilience of the people and pleased to see them overcome the devastating losses and restart economic activities,” the Ambassador said.

A release from the Swiss Embassy said under the cash-for-livelihood project, 4’199 Aila-stricken families received unconditionally an amount of Tk 15,000 each as a one-time payment in January this year.

The beneficiaries, mostly fishermen, farmers, livestock keepers, and small enterprise owners, have been selected in conjunction with local administration and local-government bodies.

The project has been implemented in Padma Pukur Union in Satkhira and in Sutarkhali Union under Dacope Upazila in Khulna district, as part of rehabilitation plans taken up for the southern coastal belt pounded by the devastating cyclonic storm from the Bay in May 2009-in a double strike after Sidr had hit the coast on November 15, 2007.

The implementation of the project has been assisted by NGO partners Ashroy Foundation and Rupantar, together with Standard Chartered Bank and Group 4 Securicor who aided during the cash disbursements.
