Dhaka, Mar 8 (UNB) - BNP leaders on Sunday asked the government to attend to its duty of serving the people and shunning intentions of wiping out the name of late President Zia ur Rahman from the country’s soil.
“Pay attention to serving people. We don’t want to disturb you unless you annoy us by trying to wipe out Zia’s name,” said BNP leader Mirza Abbas while addressing a protest meeting to mark the day BNB senior vice-president Tarique Rahman was detained in 2007.
BNP Jubo Dal organized the meeting in front of the party office in Naya Paltan with its president Syed Moazzam Hossain Alal in the chair.
BNP standing committee members Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, senior leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, joint secretaries-general Amanullah Aman and Barkatullah Bulu, as well as BNP leaders Khairul Kabir Khokon, Fazlul Haque Milon and JCD president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, among others, addressed the meeting.
Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the government is out to abolish the name of BNP founder Zia ur Rahman and his nationalist forces.
He said the government continues to file cases against BNP leaders and activists in an effort to destroy the party.
However, Mosharraf said the Awami League-led government is withdrawing cases against its own leaders and activists, which were filed during the last caretaker government following 1/11.
He demanded the unconditional release of BNP leaders including Tarique Rahman, eldest son of late Zia, and his younger brother Arafat Rahman Koko.
Mosharraf also asked the government to bring those who illegally tortured Tarique during his detention under the arm of the law.
The BNP leaders urged the party leaders and activists to be united in staging a movement for the release of Tarique Rahman, who is presently in London receiving treatment for his injuries after receiving bail on medical grounds.
Salauddin Quader Chowdhury said the government had come to power with an agenda to abolish the BNP, but they are utterly failing in this regard.
“The government is paying too much attention to abolishing the BNP, whereas they are ignoring prices of essentials, at least one job for every family, and fertilizers at zero cost, which are the electoral pledges of Awami League,” he said.
