Dhaka, Mar 8 (UNB) - Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Monday said that all citizens will have to think about how to make the best use of science and technology to improve their living standards.
“With the new discoveries and inventions in science and technology, we will have better ways of improving living standards. We will have to think about science and technology,” he said while addressing a seminar on ‘Science, Technology and Society’ held in Gulshan, Dhaka Monday evening.
Commonwealth Society of Bangladesh (CSB) organized the seminar to mark the Commonwealth Day, which fell on Monday and was observed simultaneously in all the Commonwealth countries.
Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad addressed the seminar as special guest while CSB president M Mokammel Haque chaired the session.
High Commissioner of Australia Justin Lee, and eminent former ambassadors of Bangladesh Farooq Sobhan, Mohsin and Enam Ahmed Chowdhury took part in the seminar as discussants.
Ambassador Harunur Rashid made the keynote presentation on Science, Technology and Society while CSB acting secretary-general AJM Enamul Islam read out the Commonwealth Day message from her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Renowned journalist Zaglul A Chowdhury made the vote of

Citing the importance of science and technology in education, the Finance Minister said: “Unless the core of education is based on science and technology, it is useless.”
He observed that in terms of advancement of technology, a great sea change has taken place in the country in the last few years, citing the example of the recently concluded ICT fair that drew the attention of a huge number of young people.
Speaking on the occasion as special guest, Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad spoke of the influence of science and technology in a society, adding, “Science and technology has changed the way we live.”
He, however, was a bit critical about the role of the last government in transferring technology adding.
“Why transfer of technology is not taking place?” he questioned.
“If the past government could have taken a decision on submarine cable, Bangladesh could have achieved its desired goals earlier,” was his verdict.
The Information Minister said that they are trying to utilize science and technology for the society adding, “The taskforce on ICT will be reactivated.”
He said that the government is pledge-bound to generate employment opportunities and also for human resource development.
Presenting the keynote paper, Ambassador Harunur Rashid said the government must support research on science and technology in institutions, and the private sector must also contribute to research on science and development in their own sectors.
He also showed that various challenges including energy security, food security, water security and environmental security could be addressed through the application of science and technology.
