News - 10-taka rice conundrum: Tofael disclaims as MK Anwar insists AL chief said so
Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 8 (UNB)-Parliament Monday witnessed a parley over the 10-taka-kg rice conundrum as ruling Awami League stalwart Tofael Ahmed firmly said there was no mention in the party’s last election manifesto about feeding people with rice at Tk 10 per kilo.

He disclaimed such poll pledge as opposition BNP member MK Anwar, reading out some newspaper reports, insisted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during election campaigns had pledged to feed people with rice at Tk 10 per kg if her party came to power.

“Such an observation is untrue. There can be an immediate discussion in the House over the matter. And if it proves true, the opposition member deserves thanks,” Tofael said, rising on a point-of-order permission.

He said during the last regime of Awami League from 1996 to 2001, the price of rice was Tk 10 per kg which was Tk 20 per kg during the tenure of BNP regime from 1991 to 1996.

As the two former ministers from the rival political camps parleyed in parliament over the staple price, rice sold at high prices ranging from Tk 30 for coarse variety to Tk 45 for fine variety.
