News - Naming names after pious persons while in power: Speaker weighs AL, BNP on same scales
Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 9 (UNB)-Speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate Tuesday took on the role of a judge of power politics as he weighed Awami League and BNP both on the same scales in respect of naming the names of institutions after pious persons while in power.

On a note of humour, he said both the former and the present ruling parties, while in power, try to earn blessings of Almighty Allah by renaming the institutions after the names of pious persons.

He mentioned that while in power BNP had changed the name of Hannan International Airport in Chittagong to Hazrat Shah Amanat ® International Airport.

“Now we’ve heard the airport in Dhaka has been renamed Hazrat Shahjalal ® International Airport,” the Speaker said, with an undertone of disapproving of such naming and renaming practice.

He interposed with the quips as Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid introduced a bill seeking to rename Shaheed Ziaur Rahman University in Barisal as Science and Technology University, Barisal, and BNP lawmakers decried the move.

The BNP members walked out of the House to protest the change of the university’s name.
