Now parliament’s turn to restore 1972 constitution following SC verdict scrapping 5th amendment: Menon

Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 9 (UNB) - Workers Party chief Rashed Khan Menon MP Tuesday said now the onus lies with Parliament to go back under the 1972 constitution after the Supreme Court verdict scrapping the 5th amendment.
“It is now the responsibility of the Parliament to go back to the 1972 constitution after the verdict of the High Court scrapping the 5th amendment to the constitution,” he said taking part in general debate on the thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech.
The left leader reminded that during the 5th amendment to the constitution, Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury also had staged walkout from the House in protest against the amendment. Chowdhury at the time was elected MP from National Democratic Party (NDP).
“It’s an irony of fate that now you (SQ Chowdhury) are angry with the judiciary for scrapping the 5th amendment,” said the president of the Workers Party, a component of the ruling Awami League-led Grand Alliance.
He said that they had waited long to get such a verdict from the judiciary. “This is a historic verdict; this verdict will act as a milestone in the flourishing of democracy.”
Menon mentioned that after the 5th amendment and subsequent repeated amendments the country turned into ‘moderate Muslim country’. “There is very thin difference between extremism and the term moderate.”
The Workers Party leader, elected from Dhaka’s heartland Motijheel constituency, deplored that the scrapping of the 5th amendment by the judiciary is now a headache for the BNP as this verdict opened the door to bring the war criminals under trial.
“I don’t want to mention any name but want to say that many of the BNP members will be affected by this trial,” he said.
Contending that the Bangladeshi Nationalism of the BNP is not in existence at present, he said the Bangladeshi Nationalism now turned into ‘Islamic Nationalism’. “Because Jamaat-e-Islami is now in you,” he said, pointing his fingers at the BNP leaders.
Menon, who is chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on education ministry, made a frank admission that corruption still prevails in the country and that many institutions of the country are still corrupt.
He also criticized the government for its failure to make stable the prices of essentials within commoners’ reach. “Let the TCB be activated.”
The Workers Party chief also lamented that the government could not resolve the power crisis in its last one-year tenure.
He said that law-and-order situation is under control, but incidents of murder, looting and tender grabbing are going on.
He asked the Home Minister to remain alert about these criminal incidents.
