Govt to arrange 24-hour movement to mainland for people of Dahagram-Angorpota enclaves: PM
Dhaka, Mar 10 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said that her government will arrange round the clock movement for the inhabitants of the Dahagram-Angorpota enclaves to the mainland.
She also pledged that electricity would be provided for the people who live there.
“As this piece of land is isolated from the main land, we have greater responsibility to the people of the area,” Hasina said while inaugurating free healthcare service of the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust at Dahagram-Angorpota through video conferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban.
She said though the country is suffering from power shortage, but her government would provide electricity connection at Dahagram-Angorpota.
The Prime Minister mentioned that her government is committed to providing better healthcare services across the country, including Dahagram-Angorpota.
In this connection, she told the people of Dahagram-Angorpota that her government has already taken steps to revive 18,000 community clinics across the country.
She said that punitive steps would be taken against the doctors who will not stay in their stations, especially in the rural areas. “But we will also provide lucrative facilities to the doctors who will perform their duties properly at the places like Dahagram-Angorpota.”
Hasina assured the people of Dahagram-Angorpota that the Dahagram High School will be nationalized.
Regarding the newly inaugurated National Service Programme, she said that after completing the pilot project, her government would gradually include all areas of the country under the programme.
Referring to her government’s initiative to provide better connectivity across the country, she said that the construction of Teesta Bridge is going on and the rail lines of Lalmonirhat will be revived.
The Prime Minister said that during the independence war this area was a ‘Free Zone’ (Muktanchal) and headquarters of Sector-6. She mentioned that the government would construct a monument here.
She thanked the doctors, who went there from Dhaka and Rangpur, to provide free healthcare services.
Hasina said that the Bangbandhu Memorial Trust is engaged in social welfare services and bearing the expenses of 1200 students through annual scholarships.
“This government gave utmost importance to education, healthcare and employment.”
She said that solar panel would be installed at the community health clinic of Dahagram-Angorpota and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has already conducted a feasibility study in this regard.
The Prime Minister said that her government would distribute ‘Khas’ lands among the people affected by river erosion.
In this connection, she said that the construction of Teesta Dam has been started.
Hasina also said that her government restored the allowances for freedom fighters that were stopped during the previous BNP-led alliance government.
The free healthcare services by the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust across the country started on January 17 and will continue till March 17.
The concluding ceremony of the free medical services will be held at Gopalganj.
