CHT violence: ex-president of Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad held

Comilla, Mar 10 (UNB)-Police arrested ex-president of the Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad and Jamaat leader Yakub Ali Chowdhury from Kandirpar area in the town on Tuesday night for his suspected involvement in the recent scourge of CHT violence.

Kotwali model thana officer-in-charge Kazi Motiul Islam said two cases were filed with Khagrachhari model thana against Yakub for the torching of houses and launching attack on police during the flare-ups of violence in the hill district.

“He was arrested as a fugitive from the two cases,” the OC said about the arrest of Yakub, hailed from the Bengali settlers’ community in Khagrachhari.

Sources said Yakub, a resident of Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari district, worked as an administrative officer of a private clinic in Comilla and apprentice-lawyer of Comilla court.

When he was produced before Comilla cognizance court-1 today (Wednesday), judge Saidur Rahman Gazi sent him to jail.

Three people were killed and several hundred houses set ablaze during the violence in Baghaihat of Rangamati and in the district town of Khagrachhari on February 19-23.
