Australian officers rescue boat in Indian Ocean

ADELAIDE, MAR 11 (AP/UNB) - Australian authorities have rescued 24 asylum-seekers who were having boat trouble in the Indian Ocean off northern Australia.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor says the group was headed for Australia when it was spotted by an air patrol early Thursday, northwest of the Tiwi Islands off the city of Darwin. A Border Protection Command vessel picked up the asylum-seekers and four crew.

O'Connor says the people on board are safe "and have indicated they wish to come to Australia."

They will be taken to Christmas Island, a remote Australian territory near Indonesia where Australia has a detention center that processes asylum claims.

It was the 22nd boat carrying asylum-seekers to be intercepted in Australian waters this year.
