Govt allocates Tk 267 crore to finance 20 climate-change projects

Dhaka, Mar 11 (UNB)-The government allocated Tk 267 crore for implementing 20 approved projects meant for tackling impacts the global climate change on life and livelihood and the ecology of the country.

A meeting of the high-profile Trusty Board on Climate Change Thursday made the allocation for the government-approved climate schemes.

Earlier, the Board had allocated Tk 52 crore for five projects relate to climate change.

State Minister for Environment Dr Hasan Mahmud presided over the meeting at his ministry. Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzak, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Huq and State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury attended the fourth meeting of the Trusty Board.

Major allocations made against the approved projects include Tk 22.43 crore for cleaning wastes from Buriganga and Turag Rivers, Tk 24.89 crore each for house-building project in cyclone Aila-affected areas in Khulna and Barisal districts, Tk 6 crore for projects under the Rice Research Institute, Tk 8.50 crore for dredging the Mara Dhaleswari River in Bagerhat-Pirojpur belt and Tk 18.11 crore for Risk Reduction and Adaptation Measures under the Health Ministry.

Dr Hasan Mahmud told reporters that this year 10 crore plants will be produced and each MP will be given 25,000 plants for planting in their respective constituency.

Earlier, the government allocated Tk 700 crore from the Climate Change Fund to the Environment Ministry to implement projects to combat the adversities of climate change.

The State Minister said his ministry received applications for 247 government projects and 3758 for NGO projects. “The government projects would be given priority.”

Of the 3758 NGOs, he said, nearly 3,500 have no physical fitness to get the funds. He said some 300 NGO projects would get government funds in phases.
