News - BNP again stages walkout as Speaker switches off opposition chief whip’s mike
Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 11 (UNB)-Opposition BNP again staged walkout today (Thursday) as the speaker switched off the mike of opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farooque after the time allocated to him was over, halfway through his tirade.

Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, who was in the chair in the afternoon, gave 25 minutes to the opposition chief whip for delivering his speech on the thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech.

At the culminating point of his speech Zainul Abdin told parliament that the Prime Minister’s son is involved in illegal VOIP business in the country.

As soon as he uttered such inflammatory words, the treasury-bench members started shouting at Zainul in a furor that put the House in disarray.

The Speaker repeatedly reminded the opposition chief whip that his time was over. “Honorable member, your time is over. Please finish your speech,” he kept saying.

His voice of entreaty was drowned out by the din and bustle.

At one stage of the tumultuous situation, the Speaker switched off the mike to restrain Zainul.

Angered by the chair’s action, the opposition BNP members all walked out of the assembly chamber at about 4:20 pm.

The latest one is in a chain of walkouts they have staged almost everyday since their return to parliament session after a long boycott over various issues, starting with a dispute over sitting arrangement in the front row.
