News - There can be no history of Bangladesh sans Sheikh Mujib, Ziaur Rahman: Sircar
Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 11 (UNB) - BNP senior member Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar said in Parliament on Thursday that there can be no history of Bangladesh without mentioning Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman.

He made the remark while taking part in the concluding day’s discussion on the thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech in Parliament.

The former Speaker said it is not right to think that “we have no respect for him (Sheikh Mujib).”

Indicating the treasury bench, he said whether you accept late President Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of independence or not, don’t undermine him.

Sircar said history will evaluate Bangabandhu whether “I accept him or not.”

He said Sheikh Mujib had worked for democracy throughout his political life but suddenly he formed one-party BAKSAL at the advice of some leftists.

They (leftists) had managed to convince him that without one-party rule he can’t control the country and move towards progress, he added.

The senior BNP lawmaker said Ziaur Rahman had restored multiparty democracy through the Fifth Amendment in the Constitution.

Referring to the Supreme Court verdict scrapping the Fifth Amendment, he said it does not mean that the fourth amendment will come if the Fifth Amendment goes.

Underscoring the imperative of working together by the ruling and opposition parties, he said that democracy and parliament will have to be kept alive and functioning for the wellbeing of the country and the people.

Sircar said BNP had participated in the last general election to check prolonging the emergency rule at any excuse by the last military-backed caretaker government.

He urged the Prime Minister to withdraw all cases filed against BNP leaders during the two-year regime of the last caretaker government.

Participating in the discussion, Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque alleged that the son of the Prime Minister is involved with the illegal VoIP business.

Referring to a daily newspaper report, he said the government was being deprived of crores of Taka revenue income due to the illegal VoIP business.

The opposition chief whip claimed that the independence of Bangladesh would not come if Ziaur Rahman had not proclaimed independence.
