Parliament endorses motion giving thanks to President for his New Year speech

Sangsad Bhaban, Mar 11 (UNB)-Parliament on Thursday night passed a motion thanking President Zillur Rahman for his maiden New Year address after about 42 hours of discussions on his speech concluded.

The House with Speaker Abdul Hamid in the chair adopted the thanks motion by division vote, as the opposition BNP members voiced nays.

A total of 409 amendments on the President’s thanksgiving motion brought by five members of BNP were rejected by voice vote in the heavily treasury-dominated parliament.

On January 4 this year, President Zillur Rahman delivered the New Year speech in the current fourth session of the ninth parliament.

On January 21, Chief Whip Abdus Shahid placed in the House the thanks motion on the presidential speech. The discussions often turned acrimonious as the two sides locked horns over many an incendiary issues.

The parliament session was adjourned till 5 pm on March 14. Speaker Abdul Hamid announced the adjournment.
