Mohammedan SC emerge group A champion; beats Abahani 2-1

Dhaka, Apr 9 (UNB) - Mohammedan SC emerged group A champion in the Dhaka Bank Club Cup Hockey beating arch-rival Abahani Limited by 2-1 goals in the last group match at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium here on Friday.

Mohammedan SC, which earlier confirmed their semifinal berth with all-win run in the competition, will meet group B runners-up Sonali Bank on in the 1st semi-final on April 12 (Monday) while group A runners-up Abahani Limited will take on group B champion Usha KC in the 2nd semis on April 13 (Tuesday), both at the same venue.

In the day’s match, Ariful Haq Prince and Mohammad Belal Hossain scored one goal each for the winners while Milon Hossain netted one goal for the losers.

All three goals came in the 2nd half after the match ended goalless in the first half.

Mohammedan SC found the net converting a penalty corner in the 44th minute. Prince scored with a powerful hit off a pass from Sabbir Hossain Rana, who received the ball from Musa Mia at left flank (1-0).

Belal doubled the Mohammedan margin with a field goal in the 51st minute. He directly hit the ball from the small D off a close pass from Zahidul Islam Rajan (2-0).

Milon Hossan pulled one back for Abahani Limited scoring a field goal in the 59th minute (2-1).

The experienced Mohammedan side clearly dominated the day’s proceedings, especially in the second half, and notched their deserving victory while Abahani Limited produced some scoring chances during the 1st half but failed to convert any of those into goals.

Earlier, Dhaka Mariners Youngs Club crushed Police AC by 5-0 goals in the day’s another group A encounter at the same venue.

Mainul Islam scored three goals while Abdus Sabur and Dhiman Mistry scored one goal each for the winners, who led the first half 1-0.
