News - RPC to set up 50 MW power plant in Kodda of Gazipur
Dhaka , Apr 10 (UNB) - Rural Power Company Ltd. (RPC) will set up a 50 MW dual-fuel power plant at Kodda in Gazipur district. The company, a subsidiary of the Rural Electrification Board (REB) and some of its Palli Biduyt Samities (PBSs), has already floated tender in this regard.

Official sources said, the RPC’s move came in response to the government’s highest policymakers’ call to the power production and distribution companies for setting up power plants on emergency basis.

According to official sources, the RPC, which already has a 210 MW power plant in Mymensingh, plans to set up the proposed plant within the next one and half years.

As per tender terms, the interested bidders have to submit their bids by May 19 and after getting contract, the selected bidder has to supply, install and commission the proposed plant on turnkey basis within next 15 months from the signing date of the contract.

The plant will have a dual fuel system which means it will run on furnace oil when gas is not available. If gas is available, it will run on gas.

The RPC will set up the plant from its own fund and after its installation it will sell electricity directly to the REB.

The REB has been purchasing electricity from the RPC’s 210 MW Mymensingh power plant from the inception of the generation unit.

REB chairman Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam, who is also the chairman of the RPC, told UNB that RPC has a plan to set up more power plants. “But initially, we’re going to set up the 50 MW Kodda plant as an emergency move in response to the government’s call for setting up power plants.

Sources said following the Power Division’s directive, the other power distribution companies like Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) and Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) are planning to set up power plants at different sites adjacent to Dhaka city.

The main theme of the move is to generate electricity by the distribution companies from their own plants to mitigate the power crisis in the capital city. DPDC is looking for sites somewhere along the banks of the Buriganga River and Sitalakkha River while DESCO is looking for a site on the banks of the Turag River.

However, both the DPDC and DESCO officials are taking their time to move for implementing their proposed power plants as they do not have physical experience in setting up and operation of power plants.

“We’re steadily moving forward with our plan as distribution is our main business and we don’t have physical experience about power generation. That’s why we’re not getting very fast in our project,” said a senior official at DPDC.
