News - Bangladeshi-born Briton to get into British Parliament for the first time
London, May 5 (UNB) - As the countdown of the May 6 general election in Britain began, all eyes are now centered on the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency where seven Bangladeshi-born Britons are contesting to get into the British Parliament and create a new history.

The high excitement is all around the Bangali dominated East London to see a Bangali to be elected to the House of Commons for the first time on May 6.

Rushanara Ali of ruling Labour Party, Zakir Khan of opposition Conservative Party, Azmal Mashrur of Liberal Democratic Party, Abjal Mia of Respect Party, Farid Bakth of Green Party and independent
Ahmed Malik are contesting from the constituency.

The door-to-door and street by street intense campaign will end tomorrow (Wednesday). The results will be announced on Friday.

Bethnal Green and Bow constituency is the stronghold of the Labour Party as from here the Labour Party was born.

Senior British leaders and Ministers joined campaign for Rushanara. Environment Minister Ed Miliband campaigned for Rushanara by riding a rickshaw in Brick Lane.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah Brown not only raised fund for Rushanara but also helped her campaign. Brown’s mother-in-law Polin Mackley also spoke at her election meeting.

Former Minister Frank Dobson MP stood beside her like a father. What was most surprising Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock also sought vote for Rushanara.

Last week, leaders of the Bangali community from different tiers issued statement in favor of Rushanara.

Rushanara left her home in Sylhet at the age of five. She caught the attention of British media after getting admitted into Oxford University in 1993.
