Sirajganj, Aug 20 (UNB)-A passenger bus of Greenline caught fire on the Bangabandhu Jamuna Bridge early Thursday, halting country’s long-haul north-east traffic for nearly two hours.
Police said the Dhaka-bound Volvo bus from Rangpur suddenly went afire due to mechanical fault when it reached the middle of the bridge at about 5am.
“Black flames blustered into the sky as the gas-cylinders burst into fire, creating panic among the passengers,” says a spot report.
No passenger was injured in the fire incident as they hurriedly got down from the burning bus.
The bridge authorities along with firefighters put out the fire after about two hours of frantic efforts.
Hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the important bridge following the fire incident.
Traffic movement over the important bridge turned for the normal after the burnt-down bus was moved aside.
