Belief in liberation war, professional skill, honesty, loyalty be considered for promotion to army officers: PM

Dhaka, Jul 15 (UNB)-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today asked the authorities concerned to consider key points of ‘belief in the spirit of liberation war, professional efficiency, quality of leadership, discipline, honesty, credibility, loyalty and effectiveness of appointment’ in promotion of the Army officers.
The Prime Minister gave the directives while addressing the Selection Board of Bangladesh Army at the Army Headquarter in Dhaka Cantonment.
“The officers who will be recommended by you for promotion today will lead the Army in near future. So, in the case of recruitment, posting and promotion rules of qualification, efficiency and seniority have to be followed strictly,” she told the senior officers.
Hasina, also in charge of Defense Ministry, said she has full confidence in their wisdom and judgment. “I hope you will be successful in selecting the officers by remaining above personal liking and disliking.”
The Prime Minister told the army officers that her government needs all time cooperation of the Bangladesh Army to ensure services to the people. “For this, leadership has to be entrusted to qualified, skilled, talented and patriot officers.”
Hasina remembered the martyred army officers killed in the Peelkhana carnage in February 2009.
The Prime Minister said the Awami League government always believes in development, expansion, and modernization of the Armed Forces and it implemented
massive programmes for strengthening the Armed Forces during its 1996-2001 tenure.
Referring to her initiative for recruiting female officers in the Army, first in the country’s history, Hasina said it is her government that upgraded the quality of food, including rice for two meals, for the army personnel.
After taking the responsibility this time, she said her government has undertaken a number of projects including equalization of rations of Army, Navy and Air Force, increased budgetary allocation for per capita protein intake, implemented new pay scales and multi-storey housing complex for the members of the Armed Forces.
To strengthen the participation in the UN Peacekeeping Mission, Hasina said the government has adjusted the ranks of the officers of Bangladesh Army to the international standard.
Besides, she said to serve more smartly in the peace keeping mission the government during its previous term had established a Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training at Rajendrapur and Bangladesh is the first country to send Integrated Brigade to Peacekeeping Mission.
Referring to her family relation with Bangladesh Army, Hasina said her younger brother Shaheed (martyred) Captain Sheikh Kamal had joined the war of independence as a member of a regular force while Shaheed (martyred) Sheikh Jamal got commission in the Bangladesh Army in 1975.
The Prime Minister requested the senior army officers to inform the new officers true history of the liberation war and deep love of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the Army.
The Defense Secretary, the Chief of Army Staff and all Lieutenant Generals and Major Generals of the Bangladesh Army attended the meeting.
Prime Minister’s Defense Adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique and PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were also present at the Army Headquarters.
