News - BNP average ranking central leaders blame a certain quarter for trading portfolios in the party

Dhaka, Jul 31 (UNB)- BNP’s average ranking central leaders have come down heavily on certain quarters of the party for recruiting ‘incapable and politically inexperienced’ faces in the party’s new national executive committee (NEC) in return for personal gain.

Their resentments were expressed during a closed-door meeting of the new NEC with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair in the auditorium of the city’s Diploma Engineers Institute begun at about 11:15 am today (Saturday).

It was the first meeting of the new NEC after the announcement of a 386-member national executive committee on January 1 after BNP’s last national council held on December 8 last year.

Earlier, at 10:45 am Khaleda Zia inaugurated the NEC meeting by delivering her opening remarks.

According to the meeting insiders, many leaders particularly district unit presidents who are NEC members by dint of ex-officio and average level leaders as well, blamed some of the party’s front ranking and influential leaders for recruiting some faces in various posts of office bearers who are completely new in politics and have no political or organizational experiences.

Besides, those incapable and organizationally unknown leaders have no link with the grassroots leaders and workers, the aggrieved leaders complained in the meeting.

They claimed the party some leaders have involved themselves in trading for post-position in ‘exchange for money’.

In this regard, names of some such leaders involved in the portfolio business were mentioned- couple of them are now members of the standing committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, and some in second ranking leadership in the national executive committee.

The leaders urged Khaleda Zia to find out those involved in such ‘dishonest and anti-organizational activities’.

They also said those leaders enjoying positions showing their faces in the party chairperson’s Gulshan office and by money used to not participate dedicatedly in the party’s anti-government agitation.

So far till filing the report at 6:30 pm, about 30 office bearers and members of the NEC had delivered speeches in the closed door meeting.

The leaders also regretted that many leaders and workers from the district and grassroots levels are not allowed to meet with the chairperson at her Gulshan office.

They urged the chairperson to be careful in giving nominations in future general elections so that neophyte businessmen, retired civil and military bureaucrats and musclemen can’t get party tickets which would create trouble for working in the fields.
They suggested giving nominations to the dedicated and tested party leaders who have continuous contact with field level activists and people.

Many of them also accused that central leader are making their pocket committees at the upazila level.
