Dhaka, Aug 1 (UNB) - The European Union has said it is up to the Bangladesh government to decide the way in which perpetrators of criminals acts committed in 1971 will be brought to justice.

“But that these trials need to meet international standards for fair judicial process,” a spokesperson of Vice-President and High Representative of EU Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton told UNB from Brussels in response to a query.

Maja KOCIJANCIC said the EU has consistently underlined that it is up to the government of Bangladesh to decide the way in which perpetrators of criminal acts will be brought to justice.

She said the EU has also underlined its longstanding opposition to the death penalty in all cases and in all circumstances.
