National Human Rights Commission not subservient to government: NHRC chairman
He says it’s an institution to protect rights of people
Dhaka, Aug 7 (UNB) - Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof Mizanur Rahman on Saturday said the Commission is not subservient to the government, it is an institution established to protect the rights of the people.
“If the government uses the law enforcers for their own interest, the Commission will not take it kindly and of course will protest,” he said at a view exchange meeting on Human Rights held at the DMP Headquarters.
Chaired by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner AKM Shahidul Huq, the meeting was attended by senior police officers.
Referring to the much-talked-about allegations of custodial deaths, the NHRC chairman said the commission would not hold any law enforcers responsible until investigations into the allegations are
completed. “Now the time is for a change.”
About the problems faced by the police in discharging their public functions, he said the matter will be considered while preparing the annual report of the commission, which will be submitted to the
President for his information.
DMP Commissioner AKM Shahidul Huq said hundreds of human rights bodies are working in the country but most of them are allegedly engaged in deriving personal gains instead of institutional benefit.
He requested the commission to look into it and take appropriate steps against such unscrupulous persons.
