College teacher, sergeant killed, 12 injured in separate road accidents in Gazipur

Gazipur, Aug 7 (UNB) - A college teacher and a police sergeant were killed and 12 others injured in separate road accidents here on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Karim, 42, teacher of Islamic History department of Mirzapur College in Sadar upazila, and sergeant Belal Hossain, 35, of local police lines.

Police said 13 passengers of Leguna, including Abdul Karim, were injured as a pick-up van and Leguna collided at south Shalna on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at 10am.

The injured were taken to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Karim dead after admission.

Angered by the accident, students of Mirzapur College aided by local people blocked the highway and damaged some vehicles, that also disrupted traffic movement on the highway for sometime.

Police later brought the situation under control.

Abdul Karim, who hails from Kaliganj thana of Lalmonirhat district, met the accident while he was going to his college by Leguna.

In another incident, traffic sergeant Belal Hossain was injured when a speedy truck hit him at Bhogra on Dhaka bypass road in Sadar upazila at 7am.

He was rushed to Sadar Hospital where he died after one and a half hour.

The truck driver fled away along with his vehicle following the accident.
