Lack of proper statistics on consumption of essentials major problem for ramadan price hike: business leaders

Dhaka, Aug 7 (UNB) - Business leaders on Saturday identified lack of proper statistics on consumption of essentials including edible oil, sugar as the major problem for price hike in the month of Ramadan.
“There is no statistics for consumption of edible oil and sugar during the month of Ramadan. As a result, demand increases to a huge extent compared to the supply resulting in price hike,” said M Golam Mowla, general secretary of Moulvi Bazar Baboshayee Samity, at a seminar in the city.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) organized the seminar on keeping the price of essentials at a tolerable level during Ramadan and also to ensuring quality and supply.
Referring to the wide difference in price at wholesale and retailers’ level Golam Mowla suggested introducing memo system so that they could not blame each other for price hike.
M Abul Hossain, general secretary of Paikari Bhojyotel Samity emphasized the need for ensuring a stock considering the demand of edible oil. “If there is an imbalance between supply and demand,
there will always be trend of price hike.”
Bangladesh Sugar Merchants Association president Anwar Habib said there is no real official statistics on consumption of sugar. He urged the consumers not to buy too much, 5 or 10 kg, at a time on
speculation.
Anwar also urged the government to make mandatory for import of sugar for the beverage companies as those consume 20,000 metric tons a month.
Haji Abdur Razzak, former president of Moulvi Bazar Baboshayee Samity, blamed the government for wheat price hike. It failed to import wheat when price was lower in the international market.
Russia’s recent decision to impose ban on wheat export has influenced the market in Bangladesh. The government should have import wheat two months back when the price was US$ 217 per ton, but now the price shot up to US$ 370 ton, he added.
Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samity joint secretary Shah Alam Khandaker suggested for ensuring round-the-clock transportation system for essential commodities and allowing the old trucks and covered vans for transporting essential items during Ramadan in a bid to contain price.
Bangladesh Super Market Owner’s Association general secretary Zakir Hossain suggested conducting research on demand of essentials two months before the Ramadan.
Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samity general secretary SA Kader Milon underscored the need for a coordinated monitoring among the producers, importers and wholesalers to control the price.
Chaired by DCCI president Abul Kasem Khan, DCCI directors Bashirullah Bhuiyan, Nasiruddin Khan and Hussain A Sikder also spoke at the function.
