Key Bangladesh missions fail to achieve export target in last fiscal

Dhaka, Aug 9 (UNB) - Major Bangladesh missions abroad - Washington, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, The Hague, London and Paris - could not achieve the export target set for them in the last fiscal as the overall export earnings for the year fell 7.93 percent short of the target.

The actual export earnings for fiscal 2009-10 was US$ 16204.65 million against the target of US$ 17600 million, which was 4.11 percent more than the previous year (2008-09) but 7.93 percent less than the target.

Out of the 44 Bangladesh missions, 26 achieved their respective export target while 18 missions failed to achieve the target set for them, according to the latest statistics provided by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).

The well performed 26 missions are New Delhi, Tripoli, Nairobi, Manama, Muscat, Thimpu, Hanoi, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Doha, Beijing, Yangon, Colombo, Manila, Moscow, Jakarta, Rabat, Cairo, Amman, Brunei, Stockholm, Singapore, Ankara, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tehran.

Although 18 missions could not achieve their export target in fiscal 2009-10, the export growth of 10 missions was higher than the 2008-09 fiscal. These 10 missions are The Hague, Rome, Ottawa, Canberra, Riyadh, Katmandu, Dubai, Islamabad, London and Paris.

However, the export growth of the other 8 Missions was lower in the last fiscal compared to 2008-09 fiscal. These eight missions are Berlin, Pretoria, Tashkent, Washington, Bangkok, Kuwait, Brussels and Madrid.

Out of the 16 Commercial Wings at Bangladesh missions abroad, 7 Commercial Wings achieved the export target while 9 Commercial Wings could not achieve the target set for them for fiscal 2009-10.

The Commercial Wings that achieved the export target were Beijing, Tokyo, Yangon, Moscow, New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur and Tehran.

Of the 9 Commercial Wings that could not achieve their export target in last fiscal, export growth of 5 Commercial Wings - Canberra, Ottawa, Paris, London and Dubai - was higher than 2008-09 fiscal. The growth rate of the rest 4 Commercial Wings - Washington, Berlin, Brussels and Madrid - was lower than 2008-09.

Analyzing the EPB statistics for 2009-10 fiscal on mission-wise export earnings, it was found that Bangladesh’s export earnings totaled US$ 12169 million - 75.10 percent of total export - in the countries having Commercial Wing in its missions.

Of the overall export earnings, Washington achieved US$ 4107.42 million (25.35%), Berlin achieved US$ 2250.31 million (13.89%), London US$ 1652.73 million (10.20%), Paris US$ 1091.15 million (6.73%), Madrid US$ 572.77 million (3.53%).

The 7 Commercial Wings that achieved export target fetched US$ 1165.50 million - 7.19 percent of overall export earnings while the 9 Commercial Wings that could not achieve the target earned total US$ 11004.39 million - 67.91 percent of overall export earnings.

The 7 well performed Commercial Wings achieved US$ 366.04 million more export earnings than their target while the 9 Commercial Wings achieved US$ 1625.90 million less than their target.
