QANDIL MOUNTAINS, Aug 13 (AP/UNB) - Kurdish rebels fighting Turkey from bases in northern Iraq have declared a unilateral cease-fire for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, known by its Kurdish acronym PKK, says the group’s fighters will “cease all their military operations inside Turkey” but will defend themselves if attacked.
Group spokesman Bouzan Teken told reporters the cease-fire will last from Friday until Sept. 20 to coincide with the period in which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.
The rebels are battling for autonomy in predominantly Kurdish-inhabited southeast Turkey. The fight has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people since 1984.
Turkey has ignored a series of PKK cease-fire declarations in the past.
