Dhaka, Aug 19 (UNB) - A four-member parliamentary sub-committee was formed today (Thursday) for further investigation into repression on students and teachers centering agitation by students of the Dhaka University during the last army-backed caretaker government.

A meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Education Ministry with its chairman Rashed Khan Menon in the chair formed the sub-committee.

The sub-committee comprises Rashed Khan Menon as convener with M Shah Alam, Mirza Azam and Biren Shikder as members.

Menon briefed newsmen about the decision of the parliamentary standing committee meeting.

He said the sub-committee would present the investigation report by next two months. It would carry out further inquiry watching video footages, photos and other evidences during the period of student agitation.

The decision of taking action against those involved in the repression on students and teachers will be taken after receiving the sub-committee’s inquiry report, he told reporters.

Replying to a question, Menon said according to the information of the Home Ministry a total of 68 cases were filed centering the student agitation. Of these, final reports were submitted in 43 cases, 14 cases were withdrawn by the government, seven cases were dismissed by court and the Home Ministry withdrew two cases on political consideration.

He said they have urged the government to withdraw if any other cases still remained.

Menon said the day’s standing committee meeting finalized the report on Bangladesh Textile University Bill 2010.

The meeting also discussed setting up of an Energy and Environment Institute, he said, adding that the BUET has been asked to submit a report about this to the Ministry concerned.
