Dhaka, Aug 19 (UNB) - Barrister Mainul Hosein welcomed the judgment of the Supreme Court today convicting Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Amar Desh for contempt of court.

“My own inference is that their Lordships were not willing to accept Mr Mahmudur Rahman as a journalist and Editor,” he said in a statement tonight

Barrister Hosein, also publisher of daily The New Nation, said distinction between the function of an editor and a politician must be maintained for the sanctity of the profession of journalism. The editorial institution has to be protected from being usurped by politicians. The court report should not be politically motivated.

He viewed that judiciary or the judges are not above criticism. But that should not be subjected to political attack for taking political advantage. Criticisms should be fair and well-considered, without undermining the importance of the judiciary.
