Thakurgaon, Aug 26 (UNB) - Hundreds of farmers of 11 villages in Sadar upazila gheraoed DC`s office in the town Tuesday demanding removal of illegal structures built by canal grabbers at Nornoir Beel blocking the outlet of rain water damaging transplanted aman on 5,000 acres.
They also handed a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner for submitting to the Water Resources Minister seeking remedy to their misery caused by canal grabbers.
Over 1,000 farmers of Fakhdanpur, Rahimanpur, Laxmipur, Goalpara, Moroldoba, Khalpara, Molani, Daspara, Debadangi, Bilpara and Raipur villages marched to the DC`s office with a procession and laid siege to it.
They demanded immediate steps to reclaim a canal grabbed by illegal occupiers who recently built a hatchery over the canal at Nornoir Beel blocking the outlet of flood water of the 11 villages.
The farmers said they would incur a loss of 8,000mt paddy worth Tk 10 crore due to submerging of their croplands because of the blockade.
They later withdrew their siege following intervention of Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan who directed the UNO to take necessary steps to solve their problem.
