Earthquake in SW China injures 14; damages homes

BEIJING, Aug 29 (AP/UNB) - Chinese authorities and state media say a moderate earthquake has struck southwestern China, injuring 14 people and damaging hundreds of houses. No deaths have been reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake's strength at magnitude 5.0 and said it occurred at 8:53 a.m. local time Sunday.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the earthquake jolted Ningnan county in Sichuan province and neighboring Qiaojia county in Yunnan province, damaging up to 400 homes. Officials in the two provinces said a total of 14 people have been injured.
