News - Govt to take up Tk 37.4 crore project for reclamation of 600 square kilometers land
Dhaka, Aug 31 (UNB) - The government has decided to undertake a mega project worth Tk 37.4 crore for reclamation of around 600 square kilometers of land from the sea by building the Urirchar-Noakhali cross dam in Bay of Bengal.

The government will finance the project in two phases. In the first phase, a total of Tk 25 crore will be provided to start the project and the rest of the allocation will be provided in the second phase to complete implementation of the project.

The decision came from a meeting of the Trust Board on Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Forest on Tuesday.

The meeting also ‘primarily’ decided to take up another three projects to address the adverse impact of climate change, including conservation of forest and reducing erosion of sea.

The projects include setting up a botanical garden in Chittagong at a proposed Tk 22.8 crore, introducing digital mapping system at Tk 25 crore and saving Kumira Ferrygat from sea erosion at Tk 2.75 crore.

Chaired by Minister for Environment and Forest Dr Hasan Mahmud, the meeting was attended, among others, by Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman, eminent economist Prof Kholiquzzaman, and cabinet secretary and Environment and Forest Secretary Dr Mihir Kanti Majumder.

At a press briefing after the meeting, Dr Mahmud said the government has provided an allocation of Tk 700 crore in fiscal 2010-11, as in the previous fiscal, to address the adverse impact of climate change.

“So, we have decided to take a project at proposed Tk 22.8 crore for setting up a botanical garden on 50 acres of land near Chittagong city for conservation of forests, and aid biodiversity,” he said.

He said that the meeting has also taken a decision on principle, to take up a project for the introduction of a digital mapping system.

“We recommended including the SPARSO in the digital mapping for forests project. If we implement the project, we will monitor all of the country’s forests by using digital mapping system and we will able to save our forests from destruction,” the Minister said.

About the Urirchar-Noakhali cross dam project, Dr Mahmud said that as Bangladesh is a land of rivers, a huge amount of sediments is left to the sea every year.

“If we implement the project by building Urirchar-Noakhali cross dam in the Bay of Bengal, we will be able to recovery around 600 square kilometers of land from the sea to rehabilitate a large number of people,” he said.

The Minister informed that the meeting has also taken a decision on another project at Tk 2.75 crore for saving Kumira Ferrygat from sea-erosion.
