BEIJING, Aug 31 (AP/UNB) - China says the death toll in a massive landslide in the country's northwest has risen to 1,467.
The official Xinhua News Agency cited rescue officials as saying Tuesday that another 298 people were still missing following the Aug. 8 mudslide that crashed into Zhouqu county in Gansu province, triggered by heavy rain.
The disaster was caused when a debris-blocked swollen river burst, swamping entire mountain villages.
China regularly suffers devastating summer floods, but this year's were the worst in a decade, with towns washed away in the northeast and northwest of the country.
In addition to the casualty toll, the storms have caused tens of billions of dollars in damage.
