PRISTINA, Aug 31 (AP/UNB) - Kosovo authorities say they are digging next to a disused coal mine, searching for the bodies of over 20 Serb civilians allegedly killed by ethnic Albanian rebels in 1998.

NATO-led peacekeepers were also deployed Tuesday to help local authorities investigate the site some 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of the capital Pristina.

The area was briefly under the control of the Kosovo Liberation Army in 1998 before it was retaken by Serb troops, during the 1998-1999 war, which ended after NATO air bombardment that forced
Serbia to relinquish control of its former province.

Some 1,000 people - both ethnic Albanians and Serbs - remain missing from the Kosovo war.
