
Jeddah, Sep 1 (UNB)- BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, called on the Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in Jeddah today (Wednesday).
During the meeting, Begum Zia and Dr Ihsanoglu apparently discussed various issues of relevance to the OIC in particular, and the Muslim Ummah (diaspora, or Community of Believers) in general.
The meeting took place at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah starting at 1:55 pm local time with a 20-minute one-on-one session between Begum Zia and Dr Ihsanoglu, a Turk who has been serving as the OIC secretary general since 2004. The whole meeting lasted about 40 minutes.
After the meeting, BNP chairperson’s adviser Sabihuddin Ahmed, who was at the meeting told reporters that Begum Zia expressed her satisfaction at the role played by the OIC under the dynamic leadership of Dr Ihsanoglu, particularly the efforts to infuse the organization as well as the Muslim Ummah with the spirit of mutual trust and cooperation.
He further said the OIC Secretary General expressed his appreciation for the contribution of Khaleda Zia as Prime Minister in strengthening the OIC, and the unity of the Muslim Ummah, apart from her role in establishing democracy in Bangladesh..
Reporters were told the meeting took place following a keen interest communicated by Dr Ihsanoglu to meet Begum Zia, after he came to know that she was in the country to perform umraah.
Earlier on Wednesday, Begum Zia flew to Jeddah by a special flight from Madinah, where she is scheduled to fly back today, after the important meeting was concluded.
Ambassador Abdul Alim, assistant secretary general (political) and Ambassador Abul Hasani director (political affairs) of the OIC from accompanied their Dr Ihsanoglu, while BNP chairperson’s press
secretary Maruf Kamal Khan and her special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas were part of Begum Zia’s contingent present at the meeting.
